How It Works

Every commercial kitchen that fries food faces the same problem at end of service. What do you do with the used oil?

Most kitchens do one of three things:

1. They pour it down the drain which is a criminal offence under Section 111 of the Water Industry Act 1991.

2. They store it in messy containers that leak, smell and take up valuable kitchen space.

3. Or they pay for a grease trap installation that costs hundreds to thousands of pounds and requires specialist maintenance.

Until now there has been no simple, affordable solution built specifically for independent UK food businesses.

Fry Block changes that. A plant-based powder delivered to your kitchen every month that turns used frying oil completely solid in under an hour.

It really is this simple.

Step 1 — 🔥 Keep Your Oil Hot — Above 75°C

At the end of your frying service your oil is already at the right temperature — well above 75°C. This is the perfect moment to add Fry Block. The powder needs heat to dissolve properly into the oil, so always add it while the oil is still hot from service.

If your oil has already cooled below 75°C, simply reheat it briefly before adding the powder. A quick way to check without a thermometer — dip the tip of a dry wooden spoon into the oil. If small bubbles form and fizz steadily around it, the oil is hot enough.

Do not add Fry Block to cold oil. The powder will not dissolve properly and the solidification will be incomplete.

Step 2 — 🧂 Sprinkle the Powder Directly Into the Hot Oil

Use the measuring scoop included in every Fry Block pouch. The dosing rule is simple — one level scoop per litre of oil. Sprinkle the powder evenly across the surface of the hot oil so it dissolves consistently throughout.

Step 3 — 🥄 Stir for 30 Seconds — Then Leave It Alone

Stir the oil gently but consistently for 30 seconds. The powder will dissolve almost immediately into the hot oil. You may notice the oil looks slightly cloudy or milky after stirring — this is completely normal and means the powder is working correctly.

Once the powder has dissolved, stop stirring and leave the fryer completely undisturbed at room temperature. Do not cover the fryer and do not put it in a fridge or cold room. The solidification works best when the oil cools naturally.

By the time you have finished the rest of your end-of-service clean — wiping down surfaces, clearing plates, cleaning equipment — your oil will be well on its way to becoming solid. You do not need to watch it or do anything else.

Step 4 — 🗑 Lift Out the Solid Block — Bag It — Bin It

After 30 to 60 minutes your used cooking oil has completely transformed into a firm, waxy solid block. The exact time depends on the volume of oil and the ambient temperature of your kitchen — larger volumes take slightly longer.

Run a spatula around the edge of the fryer and lift the solid block out in one piece or large sections. Place it directly into a bin bag and put it in your normal trade waste bin alongside other solid kitchen waste.

That is it. The entire process from adding the powder to having an empty, clean fryer takes under two minutes of your time — plus the passive waiting period while you clean everything else.

The solid block is not classified as hazardous waste. It requires no special disposal, no licensed collection and no paperwork. It is plant-derived and biodegrades naturally within 30 days in landfill.

What Oils Does It Work With?

Fry Block works with every commercial frying oil.

Vegetable oil · Sunflower oil · Rapeseed oil · Palm oil · Palm shortening · Lard · Beef dripping · Blended chip shop frying oils · Heavily used and darkened oil

It also works with oil that has water or liquid mixed in — common with meat drippings and some frying operations. Fry Block acts selectively, solidifying the oil and fat content while leaving any water behind. The solid block contains only the oil. Any remaining liquid can be disposed of separately.

The colour or age of the oil makes no difference to performance. Oil that has been through many frying cycles solidifies just as effectively as fresh oil.

What Happens To The Solid Block?

The solidified block goes straight into your normal trade waste bin. No specialist disposal, licensed waste carrier required or any additional cost.

The block is plant-derived, non-toxic and non-hazardous. It biodegrades naturally within 30 days in landfill — significantly faster than the oil would break down in its liquid form. Putting it in your trade waste bin is the correct, legal and environmentally responsible method of disposal.

Do not put the solid block in recycling bins. Do not pour it back into a fryer or attempt to reuse it. Do not put it into food waste collections.

Is It Legal?

Yes. Fry Block gives your kitchen a fully legally compliant method for disposing of used cooking oil between licensed collections or as a standalone disposal solution for smaller operations.

Pouring cooking oil down the drain is illegal under Section 111 of the Water Industry Act 1991. Storing oil in containers and then disposing of it informally carries the same legal risk. Fry Block eliminates both problems.

The solidified block placed in your trade waste bin is compliant with UK waste disposal regulations. It is solid, non-hazardous and processed through your normal commercial waste collection.

Environmental Health officers increasingly inspect commercial kitchens for evidence of improper oil disposal. Having Fry Block on your shelf and a clean, documented disposal process protects your business from enforcement action.

Is It Safe?

Yes. Fry Block contains a plant-derived fatty acid produced from castor oil. It is the same compound used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food-grade lubricants. It is non-toxic, non-hazardous, odourless and tasteless.

Under the GHS international hazard classification system, Fry Block is classified as not hazardous in its flake form. No hazard symbols, warning labels or precautionary statements are required on the packaging because none apply.

What If It Doesn't Solidify Properly?

If your oil does not solidify completely there are two likely causes.

  1. The oil was not hot enough when you added the powder. This is the most common reason. The powder must be added to oil above 75°C. If the oil had cooled below this temperature the powder may not have dissolved fully. Reheat the oil to above 75°C, add the remaining dose and allow to cool again.
  2. The dose was too low for the volume of oil. Check the dosing table above and confirm you used the right amount for your fryer size. If in doubt, add a slightly larger dose — using a little more than the recommended amount does not cause any harm and will produce a firmer block.
